Today I Learned

Small things I notice.

Not essays. Just little field notes. Ren helps me remember them.

April 2026

  • Apr 23You can pipe structured Notion DB output straight into a Slack DM block without JSON.stringify — it keeps the dividers.
  • Apr 22Kids argue less on road trips if you give the youngest the map. They don't read it. They just hold it.
  • Apr 21Most "agent reliability" problems are actually prompt scope problems. Narrow the job. Rerun.
  • Apr 20Suzy's trick: when a kid can't find the word, don't fill it in. Ask what color it feels like. Works on adults too.
  • Apr 18Notion API retries: jittered exponential backoff beats fixed — their 429s cluster.
  • Apr 15The meeting you dread least is the one where someone brought a real question.
  • Apr 12Claude writes better when you give it your own draft to tear apart than a blank prompt.

March 2026

  • Mar 28A daily walk with no phone is probably the highest-ROI habit I have.
  • Mar 20If a script runs on your laptop, it doesn't run. Cron it somewhere that wakes up at 6.
  • Mar 14Most "urgent" emails stop being urgent if you wait 90 minutes.
  • Mar 08IFS: the part of me that panics at deadlines is maybe nine years old. Worth knowing.
  • Mar 01Cold-brew coffee + a splash of cream + flaky salt. Don't ask; try.

February 2026

  • Feb 27Writing a book slower is its own skill. Not the same as writing slowly.
  • Feb 20Renewal clients respond to texts 4x more than emails. Still email the carrier, though.
  • Feb 12A "boundary" you only keep when you're calm isn't a boundary. It's a preference.
